Heartland Crochet/Knitting Getaway Retreat 2017

Heartland Crochet/Knitting Getaway Retreat 2017

Forty-four ladies came together and had a great time at the Heartland Crochet/Knitting Getaway 2017.  Coming from around Kansas and from as far away as Colorado Springs, we gathered at the Park City Best Western on Sept.29-Oct 1, for three days of knotting yarn and telling yarns.

There is nothing better than meeting fellow yarnies who take beautifully spun fibers and turn it into golden memories.  But, it’s not just the yarn or just the making of something that keeps us coming back for more. It is the memories of those we knitted or crocheted with, and the event in our lives we are creating an item for; it’s the entire process or project we work on.

Friday night was a big “Hello!” to everyone!  At registration, each attendee was given a goodie welcome bag, provided byThe Creation Station in Newton. We got things started off with a couple of drawings for door prizes.  Catherine from The Creation Station donated enough yarn to provide 17 of the door prizes. In addition, three skeins were donated by Picket Fence and a couple by Craftsy.  A great big “Thank you!” goes to these three companies for all the beautiful yarn that they shared with all of our new friends.

Saturday morning, we took a field trip to The Creation Station to look for bargains and yarn treasures.  No one seemed to have a problem finding yarn for new projects.  We spent lots of time in the store, shopping and giggling.  Many never knew our store was here and they found a true yarn heaven.  Thanks to all who came on the field trip!

After the trip, we returned to the hotel for lunch and my personal favorite; sleep knitting. I got seated in a deep comfy couch, pulled my yarn out and started to work on my Free Your Fade shawl.  But it really is hard to knit when you fall asleep every third stitch.  I was a mess, and so was my knitting.  I had to rip the entire thing out.  Oh well, a little-frogged knitting is nothing to cry about. I had to leave early in the evening, but I was told the crocheting, creating and conversing went on until well past eleven. Sunday morning, everyone said their goodbyes and headed for home.

We were a bevy of brave ladies who came; most of us not knowing anyone else.  Yet because of our shared passion, we all quickly became friends.  While many of us were from Wichita most of us had never met before. But because of this retreat, we all have 43 new friends.

Here are some of the comments-

These are just a few of the good times had by all.  Hats off to Michelle Donham, Laura Sparks and Holli Schmidt for a job well done.  I loved working with you ladies and getting to know you through this whole process – Let’s do it again!

And a further thank you to Michelle Donham and her sister Melody for sharing the idea with all of us.
